I Can Taste it (HELVETICA- great movie, KISS, ... )

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 10:49:25 PM PDT

I'm sorry, but Pink Floyd's Echoes just kicked on to my Bose Stored system, (that's def as i get to upper-class, i own none homes, am struggling paycheck to paycheck w/ my partner.  it's great to read the Atlantic, my fave mag now, & see all the ads FOR WHAT I AM SUPPOSED TO BE.)

i am NONE of those things.  i love great music, & am a picky beast re great sound.

THIS IS NOT THE POINT TO ARGUE, even those of us, trying to get by, recognize the importance of high quality reproduction of music to get us through our daily lives.

I am not being facetious.  In fact, I believe, that there are millions of Americans like me, REACHING   JUST out of their sphere,

McCain chooses running mate

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 10:15:16 PM PDT

on the TeeVee, CNN says McCain has chosen his veep candidate. He probably better spit it out quick, before he forgets the name. Of course, he is trying to suck the air out of the Dem Convention/Obama. And of course the corporate media will play along with it.

Imho, it will be Pawlenty, which is super stupid. Romney would be a much better choice for the GOP. With a 72 year old potential president who may be on his last legs, mentally and physically and emotionally, it makes a big difference who's next in line. Pawlenty would be a highly irresponsible as well as stupid move.

Advice for Republicans

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 09:18:08 PM PDT

Every time I turn on the TV, the Republicans are offering advice to Democrats about how make all our lives better. There isn’t a move that Democrats have made this week that we didn’t have some dweeb on Larry King Live or some other show telling us how to make it better.

Democrats have been entirely too polite in their response. Maybe they don’t know what to say. No problem. Just return the favor by providing them some kindly advice about how Republicans can win the presidency. Ask them, "Is John McCain ready to turn his back on Republican ideology?"

PrisonerOfW.Com Updated (and shirts now available)

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 09:05:56 PM PDT

OK, I promise to stop pimping this so much (at least for awhile), but I just wanted to say that I've improved the site by embedding the key quotes from the articles/transcripts in question.

I've also made the text and links larger and easier to navigate (all links now open in a new window).

I've added a few more examples of McCain's POW-Wow obsession, including his bizarre speech yesterday.

I've highlighted 4 key links which should FINALLY get through to ANY remaining PUMA types.

And finally, due to popular demand, I've "flip-flopped" and gone ahead and turned the T-shirt into a real product!

Keep submitting more examples via the form on the site as you find them!

(note: FYI, the site has already received over 11,000 visitors in 48 hours of existence! Not bad!)

McCain: You're not "rich," unless...

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 09:00:28 PM PDT

...you have five million a year IN INCOME.

This diary is going to revisit the Saddleback remarks by John McCain, because I strongly suspect that this audience of Kossacks--being Democrats and progressives--probably don't understand what it's like to have a hundred million bucks in your wife's back pocket. So you probably don't understand the importance of that particular turn of phrase:

As you recall: at Saddleback, Pastor Rick Warren asked each presidential candidate to was asked to define "rich."

Obama didn't hesitate. "I would argue that if you are making more than $250,000, then you are in the top 3, 4 percent of this country," he said. "You are doing well."

McCain took a far more discursive approach to answering the question but ultimately settled on a dramatically higher figure: "I think if you're just talking about income, how about $5 million?"

The key phrase in the McCain definition is: *"if you are talking about INCOME..."* (continued)

Sens. Clinton & Biden Gave Me a Great Idea

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 08:43:09 PM PDT

This isn't much of a "diary," but Sens. Clinton & Biden gave me an idea. Last night Hillary said:

With an agenda like that, it makes sense that George Bush and John McCain will be together next week in the Twin Cities. Because these days they're awfully hard to tell apart.

Then tonight Biden literally got them confused! You can't make this stuff up.

So, to help out all the viewers next week, I'm sending these to St. Paul, MN:

My eventful night watching the DNC..

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 08:19:53 PM PDT

Tonight was supposed to be a happy night, but instead as I sat back to watch the C-SPAN coverage of the convention, I couldn’t help but hear my family in the kitchen. They were talking about the election but it was hard to hear over the roar of the television I was listening too. I knew why they were whispering. They didn’t want me to hear.

The McCain Commercial I Want to See

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 08:02:17 PM PDT

I don't have the tools or know the right people to actually film this, so if anyone wants to make it, you're certainly welcome to the idea...

Veteran 1:  "My name is XXXXX.  I was a POW in Viet Nam for 3 years, but I DIDN'T vote to attack Iraq even though they had nothing to do with 9/11."

Veteran 2:  "My name is XXXXX.  I was a POW in Viet Nam for 4 years, but I DIDN'T vote to allow the government to use the same techniques that the Vietnamese used against me."

Veteran 3:  "My name is XXXXX.  I was a POW in Viet Nam for 2 years, but I DIDN'T cheat on my wife while she was in the hospital and marry my rich mistress."

Veteran 4:  "My name is XXXXX.  I was a POW in Iraq for 2 years, but I DO know how many homes I have.  I'm homeless."

Text:  John McCain, we honor the sacrifice you've made, but being a POW will never excuse your poor judgment.

Liveblogging the Convention

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 07:55:16 PM PDT

Biden's speech began with lovely tributes to his family, including his mother, of whom he said:

My mother's creed is the American creed: no one is better than you. You are everyone's equal, and everyone is equal to you.

Biden ends by using his authority on foreign policy to detail how Obama's foreign policy judgment has time and again been correct while McCain has been wrong. Biden's foreign policy judgment will not be substituted for Obama's; instead, his credibility will be used to affirm Obama's judgment.

John McCain was wrong, and Barack Obama was right -- again, and again, and again, on the most important national security issues of our time, John McCain was wrong and Barack Obama has been proven right.

And here comes Obama, introduced by Biden's wife Jill.

McCain's PUMA ad blitz: Who is "Debra"?

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 07:40:25 PM PDT

Who is she? Who is the carefully groomed and scripted Debra Bartoshevich in McCain's new ad "Debra"?

Is she a lifelong Democrat, a Hillary backer who switched to McCain because Obama lacks "experience"? That is what she and her PUMA admirers claim. But the YouTube video at the top of this post, an unscripted interview with a local reporter, tells a far different story. What lifelong Democrat says, as she does repeatedly,  "Democrat party"?  And why was the McCain team already so poised to recruit her that she got a phone call from them "approximately three minutes" after Hillary Clinton's  June 5 concession speech?

Her strange journey to center stage of McCain's Democrat-switcher campaign began long before that campaign gleefully leaked to reporters their coup in persuading one of Wisconsin's Hillary Clinton delegates to pledge publicly she would vote for John McCain. Read on below the fold!

IAFF Endorses Obama

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 07:38:37 PM PDT

So, I blogged over at UnionReview and Uniongal that IAFF endorsed Obama.  For those of you who don't know, IAFF endorsed  Mike DeWine in Ohio for Senate despite Sherrod Brown's support among the locals. The IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters) endorsed Huckabee in the primary (and Dodd). They've even endorsed Christ (yep, Charlie) and Jim Douglas (VT). Sure, they endorsed Kerry, but this endorsement is really different. This time, the endorsement really packed a punch AND, guess who represented Obama to the IAFF at the National Convention, come on guess.  Biden.

Okay, enough giber gabbering, let's talk IAFF and let's hear what they had to say...

which is worse, losing a child and wife or being a POW?

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 07:33:18 PM PDT

I hope nobody thinks this is too cynical and overly analytical... but I'm watching Joe Biden's son bring tears to the eyes of convention goers with the recounting of the heroics of his father after his mother and brother were killed in a car wreck. It's definitely a touching story, and I've got to admit it touches me just as much or more so than the timeworn crosses in the sand 5 1/2 years of John McCain's POW story...

McCain Advisor:  There are no uninsured Americans

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 07:14:53 PM PDT

How's this for another kick to working Americans who are struggling to get by?  According to the guy that helped develop McCain's health care plan, no Americans should be considered uninsured.

His logic?  Anyone who can get into a hospital emergency room is able to access health care, and therefore shouldn't be considered uninsured.  His solution to the health insurance crisis is simply to define the problem away.

South Carolinians for Obama  I need help

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 07:00:30 PM PDT

I am a member of Veterans for Obama from Columbia SC and I have volunteered to have a "convention party" every day of the convention, well no one has bothered to RSVP or share a desire to experience the convention with "friends" or other Democtratic leaning progressives.

I was phoned today by a reporter from the State questioning me about the "convention party" and was wondering if it would be alright for him to stop by and interview any willing "convention goers" that desired to share their thoughts. I have sent out a new e mail to the group Veterans for Obama and have one reply that will be here.

I just watched John Kerry kick McCain in the teeth (with transcript/video)

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 06:48:30 PM PDT

I'm speechless.

John Kerry just explained not only why I'm a Democrat, but why I don't trust Republicans on ANYTHING -- including their so-called strength: "national security".

"I'll have my staff get back to you...."

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 05:40:05 PM PDT

People have been jumping all over John McCain's forgetting of how many homes he owns, and rightfully so - the idea of a man who can't even remember his own assets being the guy who'll fix the American economy is just outright laughable. I'm all for ripping on McCain on this front, or really on any front. But while it's good to take from this a sense of just how out of touch McCain is about the real conditions of the economy, there's another thing we should take away from this - and a disturbing pattern that raises questions about whether this man is fit to hold the office of leader of the free world.

Best DNC t-shirt? Spike Lee wearing Obama dunking on McCain

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 05:07:57 PM PDT

I'm not in town, of course, but the description of Spike Lee walking around in a t-shirt showing Obama dunking on McCain has got to be best around.

But was Obama fouled on the way to the backet?  YES, and it counts, and Obama goes to the line...

A new AP dispatch reports on this and other stars in attendance.
